E. Sawdy, one of the oldest pioneers of Woodland, died on Thursday
last. He was 78 years old. He leaves a wife and large family to mourn
his loss.

"Portrait & Biographical History of Ionia & Montcalm Co, MI"--Sketch of
M.E. Curtis, of the firm of Curtis & Sawdy]--"The father of Mrs. Curtis
was Ebenezer Sawdy, who was born in Scipio*, Cauyga County, N.Y., March
2, 1812, and was reared in Orleans County, to which his parents went
when he was four years old. He was married there at the age of
twenty-four to Ruth Rose, who was born in that county in 1820, and whose
father, Benjamin Rose, was a farmer. The latter spent his last years in
this State with his daughter and family, having retired from active
life. In the spring of 1842 Mr. Sawdy came to Barry County, this State,
traveling from the lakes on foot. He bought forty acres of wild land,
then returned East and in the fall brought his family to their new
home. He built a rude log house and literally hewed out a farm from the
timber. He eventually became the owner of considerable landed property
and was numbered among the successful members of the community. He was
the first mail carrier between Woodland and South Cass, and carried the
mail tied up in a handkerchief. He was Justice of the Peace for years
and in politics was a Republican. His death took place February 27,
1890. The Sawdys are of English ancestry."

* "In the original settling of the township of Scipio, the territory it
covered was very extensive. It included not only the present townships
of Venice, Ledyard, part of Springport, but also Sempronious across Lake
Owasco, and also a part of Marcellus, which is now in Onondaga County.

Excerpt--POST OFFICES, "Early in history of [Woodland] the settlers
obtained letters from Hastings. In 1849 Woodland Post Office
established and appointment of post master given to Nehemiah Hovewell.
Ebenezer Sawdy was earliest mail carrier and at first brought the mail
from Odessa afoot once a week in his vest pocket or hankerchief, as
happened to be most convenient. There was however, some protest against
that method of transporting the U.S. Mail and at the end of six months a
mail pouch was provided."

----------------------------------------------------
The obituary of James H. Sawdy tells that he was the third child of a
family of ten, born to Ebenezer and Ruth Sawdy, pioneer settlers of
Woodland township. His parents moved from New York state to Michigan in
1842 and settled on Sec. 15 within the present village limits where the
son James was born. A temporary house without a floor, windows or doors
was his birthplace. Later the parents located one mile east and 1/2
mile north where he was reared to boyhood. His education consisted of a
few winters' attendance at school at the Red School House, one mile east
of the present village of Woodland.

The Sawdy Bible, which was owned by Ebenezer Sawdy's great-grandson,
Homer Sawdy, contained the following entries--

BENJAMIN R. ROSE, BARRY COUNTY CIVIL WAR VETERAN
By Debra Stadel Eddy

Benjamin R. Rose was a brother of my husband's great-great-grandmother,
Ruth Rose, the wife of Ebenezer Sawdy. Their parents were Benjamin Rose
(1785-1872) and Sarah Hamilton (1795-1860), pioneers of Woodland,
Michigan. The Rose and Sawdy families were among the first landowners
of Barry County, the elder Benjamin Rose purchasing 80 acres of land in
section 17 on June 15, 1842.

Much remains unknown about Benjamin R. Rose. He was born in New York in
1829 and died February 12, 1904, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the home
of his niece, Mrs. J. Roland Clark, whose exact relationship is
unknown. He had lived in Grand Rapids for three years prior to his
death, and was buried in the Rose family plot in Fuller Cemetery,
Carlton Twp., Barry County, Michigan, with his parents, two children,
and two of his three wives.

Benjamin appeared in the 1850 census with his parents and sister Jane in
the town of Carlton, Orleans County, New York. His brother Marvin and
his family lived in the same house. He moved to Michigan from Orleans
County, New York, in February 1852.

In 1860, Benjamin R. Rose, his first wife, Adeline, and son Milton lived
on a farm in Carlton Twp, Barry County, Michigan. His recently widowed
father also lived with them, as well as an unrelated farm laborer.
Adeline died in 1870, at age 35, and was buried in the Fuller Cemetery.
Milton died from consumption at age 19 in Kansas City, Missouri, on May
14, 1876, and was also buried in the family lot in Fuller Cemetery.

According to Civil War Pension File 304691, Benjamin Rose enlisted as a
Private in September 1862 at Carlton (Barry County) in Company K, 6th
Regiment, 6th Michigan Cavalry. He stated that for five years preceding
his enlistment he had been a resident of the township of Carlton in
Barry County, Michigan, and his occupation was farming. In January or
February, following his enlistment, he was taken sick in the District of
Columbia with inflammation of the lungs, and was unable to work for
about four months. The illness left him in a weak state of health, and
he was assigned work in the hospital as a steward after that. He was
discharged in June 1865, but was shortly afterward stricken with illness
and unable to leave Lincoln Hospital at Washington, DC. for three or
four weeks. When he was well enough, he went back to his native Orleans
County, New York. Over a period of several years he suffered chronic
lung and gastric problems, which left him unable to do hard manual
labor. His physician's affidavit stated, "I have known the said Benj.
R. Rose since July 1865. In July 1865, and in the fall of 1866, and
again in February and March 1867, I treated him for disease of the lungs
and abdominal visera (sic). I have no doubt but his disease was caused
by exposure. He has not, since that time I first saw him, been able to
labor and in my opinion will never be able to."

Benjamin Rose was a member of the Barry County Pioneer Association from
1873-1880.

On January 9, 1874, B. R. Rose became a member of the Barry Lodge No.
321 Free & Accepted Masons. For the remainder of his life, he was very
active in Masonic lodge work.

After he was discharged from military service, Benjamin R. Rose married
his second wife, Rosana F. Fuller (born 1836), daughter of Joseph and
Eliza Fuller. They had at least one child, a son, Marvin B. Rose, who
was born in November 1875 in Hastings, and died July 10, 1876, in
Hastings. Rosana died Sept. 2, 1893, and was buried in the Fuller
Cemetery.

On Sept. 12, 1894, in Hastings, Benjamin Rose married his third wife,
Hattie May (Barnum) Watkins. She had a daughter, Marie Watkins, who was
born July 1, 1885.

According to GAR records at the State Archives of Michigan in Lansing,
Benjamin Rose was a charter member of the Grand Army of the Republic
Post 226, Sherman, Michigan [northwest of Cadillac, Michigan]. It is
not known when he lived at Sherman, or how long he stayed.

In 1901, appearing before a notary public, Benjamin R. Rose told that
"on or about the month of July 1901, while moving his household
furniture from Hastings, County of Barry, Mich. to Grand Rapids, County
of Kent, Michigan, the same said pension certificate was lost...he has
made due and diligent search for the same, has been unable to find the
said certificate." He requested that a permit be issued for the
quarterly allowance due him [$8.00 a month] and that a new certificate
be issued in lieu of the original certificate.

Further research into the life of Benjamin R. Rose has yet to be done.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has more information on the
Rose family. My address is: 2521 W. Needmore Hwy., Charlotte, MI

JURY DISAGREED IN CASE OF IDA FURNIA AGAINST THE ESTATE OF B.R. ROSE

The Jury in the case of Mrs. Ida Furnia, of Ludington, who claims to be
the sold heir of the late B.R. Rose, which case was tried in the Kent
Couty Circuit Court, did not agree. The judge submitted three questions
for the jury to consider, as follows:

1. Was Ida Furnia the child of the late B.R. Rose?

2. If so, were her father and mother lawfully married?

3. Was Ida Furnia omitted from the will of B.R. Rose by accident or
mistake?

We are informed that on the first question the jury was unanimous. On
the second they disagreed, and also on the third. We have not learned
whether or not the case will be tried again.

General Affidavit, State of Michigan, County of Barry, in claim No.
216321 of Benjamin R. Rose late of Company K Regiment of 6 Mich. Reg.
Volunteers, personally appeared before me, the undersigned, duly
authorized to administer oaths within and for said county and State,
Benjamin R. Rose aged 66 years; who being duly sworn state in relation
to said claim as follows:

"On the first of March 1890, I caught cold which settled on my lungs,
they being diseased and weak at the time, caused violent coughing
spells, and after one of those coughing spells I discovered a bunch in
my left groin, not knowing what it was at once called Dr. A.P. Drake,
who pronounced it a rupture caused from severe coughing. He at once
pronounced a truss and fitted it to me and I have worn one ever since.
It is with great difficulty that I can get a truss that will hold it in
place and once down I have to lay on my back for an hour or more getting
it back, at times have had to use hot applications to reduce the
imflammation before it would yield. I submit the above with
accompanying affidavit as additional evidence to show that the rupture
is the result of the original lung trouble of which I am already drawing
pension. The above is my own handwriting without dictation from
anyone. Hastings, Barry County Mich., Benjamin R. Rose

"Sworn to and subscribed before me on this 18th day of December 1896 by

executed the same. I further certify that I am nowise interested in
said case, nor am I concerned in the prosecution.

JAMES HENRY SAWDY, BARRY COUNTY CIVIL WAR VETERAN
By Debra Stadel Eddy

James Henry Sawdy was a brother of my husband's great-grandfather,
Edward Sawdy. James was born December 2, 1843, in Woodland, Barry
County, Michigan, the third of ten children born to Ebenezer Sawdy
(1812-1890) and Ruth Rose (1820-1905), pioneer settlers of Woodland
Township. The Sawdys moved from Carlton, Orleans County, New York to
Michigan in 1842 and settled on section 15 within the present village
limits of Woodland, where James was born. According to his obituary, a
temporary house without a floor, windows or doors was his birthplace.
Later his parents located one mile east and a half mile north where he
was reared to boyhood. His education consisted of a few winters'
attendance at the Red School House, one mile east of the present village
of Woodland.

On July 8, 1862, he enlisted as a Private in Company C, 21st Michigan
Infantry, serving the duration of the Civil War. He was mustered
September 3, 1862 and participated in seventeen battles. He was
honorably discharged at Alexandria, Virginia on June 23, 1865. The late
Cliff Sawdy of Woodland, told that his grandfather was captured and
placed in a prison camp in the south, nearly starving to death. When
released, he walked all the way back to Michigan. Upon his arrival
home, he was so hungry that he picked some field corn from his brother's
field and ate it raw.

He married Julia M. Woodmansee, daughter of Miles Woodmansee and Phiana
Lee, on February 22, 1869. He settled on Section 23 where a farm was
cleared from the forest. Accustomed to hard work, James walked to
Battle Creek to get 40 pounds of flour for one bushel of wheat,
according to Cliff Sawdy. James and Julia resided on that farm until
retirement, when they moved to the village of Woodland in 1898.

Three sons and one daughter were born to James and Julia Sawdy:

Bert Ebenezer Sawdy was born January 31, 1872 in Woodland, Barry Co., MI
and died August 24, 1952 in Woodland. He and his first two wives are
buried in Woodland Memorial Park. He was married to Lucy Meyers,
daughter of Peter S. Meyers and Helena Mays, on October 20, 1892 in
Barry County. Lucy was born Sept. 4, 1872 in Putnam Co., Ohio and died
March 26, 1924 in Woodland. They had seven children: Freida Sawdy, who
married Leo Royston; Paul Rex Sawdy, who married Della Argot; Opal May
Sawdy, who married Marion M. Shade; Leona Helina Sawdy, who married
Kenneth Travis; Clifton James Sawdy, who married Agatha Opal Smith;
Victor Laverne Sawdy, who married Francis H. (Hill) Yundquist; and
Bethel Peter Sawdy, who married May Sandborn. On December 30, 1925,
Bert Sawdy married Ida Wagner, the oldest daughter of Fred and Emma
Wagner. She was born January 30, 1886 in Woodland Township, and died
April 10, 1941. After Ida's death, Bert married Rhoda Austin (born
April 13, 1880, died December 24, 1972), daughter of Christian Yager and
Lucy Carpenter.

2. Harry B. Sawdy was born March 20, 1879 in Woodland, and died in
1882. He is buried in Woodland Memorial Park, Woodland.

3. Nina Edith Sawdy, born 1881, was married on August 9, 1898 in Barry
County, to Charles Nichols, an engineer on the CK&S railroad.

4. Leo George Sawdy was born August 23, 1885 in Woodland. He married
Nina L. Esterbrook on Sept. 27, 1905 in Barry County.

James H. Sawdy joined the Kilpatrick United Brethren church in 1873 and
in 1896 transferred his membership to the Woodland United Brethren
church. He was a devout Christian and very involved in church
activities. His life was one of devotion and unselfish service to his
family, friends and neighbors.

James Henry Sawdy died at age 75 on Sept. 19, 1919, in Woodland. Julia
died June 11, 1924, in Woodland10. They were both buried in Woodland
Memorial Park, Woodland, Michigan.

On 24 Dec 1876 when Ardella 'Della' was 16, she married Martin E.
CURTIS, son of John Nelson CURTIS (1819/1824-1890) & Mary CUNNINGHAM
(1826/1828-1880). Born on 29 May 1855 in Woodland, Barry Co, MI. Martin
E. died in Big Rapids, Mecosta Co., MI in 1941; he was 85. Buried in
Highland View Cem., Big Rapids, MI. Occupation: Grocery Store Owner,
Edmore, MI. Religion: Methodist Episcopal.

Martin Curtis was Village Trustee of Woodland 2 years. He was connected
with the Odd Fellows, Good Templars and Knights of the Maccabees, in
each of which he held office. He was particularly active in the Good
Templars' work and was Chief Templar of the 13th district. He exercised
the rights of suffrage with the Prohibitionists, being one of those who
believed the liquor question the all-important one at the time. He
belonged to the Methodist Episcopal church, was a Trustee and Class
Leader, taking an active part in the religious and benevolent work that
was carried on by the congregation.

He was associated in business with his brother-in-law, Calvin Sawdy,
where he opened a meat market in Edmore in 1884. For two years he was
engaged in that business and stock-dealing, and he then entered upon the
sale of groceries. He and Calvin became partners in 1889.

The grandfather of Martin Curtis was Dr. John M. Curtis, who was born in
England and ws graduated from a medical college there. He came to
America and located near Boston, MA, but later removed to Chatham,
Canada. in 1844 he came to MI and established himself at Woodland,
Barry Co, where he became very prominent both as a citizen and a pioneer
physician. His last years were spent there, and he is well remembered
by the old settlers of that section. The direct progenitor of our
subject was John N. Curtis, who was born in PA and engaged in farming in
Canada several years. he came to Barry Co, MI the same year as his
father, buying Government land in Woodland twp., reclaiming a farm and
finally had 120 acres under good improvement. During the last 25 years
of his life he was in poor health, but he lived to the age of 67 years.
He was a member of the Church of God. his wife was Mary Cunningham, a
native of Ireland, whose parents emigrated to Canada during her
childhood. Her father, Patrick Cunningham, carried on a farm and died
in the Dominion. The family of John N. Curtis and his wife consisted of
9 children, and he of whom we write is third on the family roll.

22. Edward A. SAWDY. Born in Jul 1864 in Woodland, Barry Co, MI. Edward
A. died in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw Co, MI on 1 Jan 1915; he was 50. Buried
in Woodland Memorial Park, Woodland, MI. Occupation: Farmer. Religion:
United Brethren.

Edward Sawdy was a prominent citizen in Woodland. He served two terms
as Justice of the Peace, was a well known citizen and active farmer. He
lived his entire life in Woodland township. He was converted in
childhood and united with the Kilpatrick United Brethren church, then
later on united with the Woodland U. B. Church, of which he remained a
faithful member until his death. He was twice elected United Brethren
Conference Treasurer
-----------------------------
[The Hastings Banner, Thurs., 8 May 1913, pg 6, Woodland]
E.A. Sawdy left for Decatur, Ill., Tuesday evening to attend the general
conference of the Liberal United Brethren Church. This certainly is an
honor of which Mr. Sawdy need feel proud, as only four delegates are
elected from Michigan, their expenses being paid by the church. He
expects to be gone two weeks.
-----------------------------
[The Hastings Banner, Thurs., 3 Sept. 1903, Woodland Section]
Edward Sawdy has rented his farm to Walter Leary for three years, and Ed
has removed to Lake Odessa. Mr. Sawdy wished to come to our village but
could not find a house.
---------------------
The Fall before he died, he had complained about pains in his bowels and
consulted the doctor in October. As his condition did not seem to
improve, the doctor advised him about Dec. 1 to go somewhere for special
examination and hospital treatment. He left for the U of M hospital,
Monday, Dec. 7. he was operated on a few days later and reported
getting along as well as could be expected. Mrs. Sawdy and son Miles
were there to see him on Tuesday, Dec. 22, and came away feeling that he
was recovering satisfactorily and might be home within a few weeks. but
from that time no word came from him until his death. However, a card
came Monday on which appeared among a few short sentences, 'I am not so
well today. Am getting weaker every day.' This card was dated Jan 1,
and probably had been written by his nurse in the forenoon. Edward
Sawdy died of a perforated mass in his stomach. Cliff Sawdy's dad and
John Stairs went down to Ann Arbor and got the body, and came back with
it on the train. According to the probate file, the charge of
transporting the body from Ann Arbor to Woodland, and the undertaker
and work at Ann Arbor was $30.82. The casket and funeral expenses were
$85.00. Flowers were $4.50, and misc. expenses and telephone charges
were $.35.

Edward Sawdy's creditors were--A. V. Palmerton of Woodland, $32.74 for
threshing oats and wheat; Lawrence l. Faul, storekeeper in Woodland,
$2.39; Truman C. Munion, blacksmith, $6.95. The total charge for the
estate was $120.67.

Cliff said that Edward Sawdy was a tobacco chewer, which may have
contributed to his digestive problems.

Ira Stairs said that Edward Sawdy was a very particular man. Things had
to be done a certain way, such as stacking hay in the barn. If they
were not done according to his wishes, they had to be redone until it
was right.

He left son Miles the 60 acres on the west side of Velte Road, he fixed
up the granary and lived there 7-8 years. Clare got the 40 on the east
side of the road where Orlo Smith lives. Harley got property on
Saddlebag Lake where Enness built cottages on the south side of Morrell
Smith's. Cliff Sawdy said hard times came along and they all lost it.
